The Schengen 90/180-Day Rule, Explained
Most of our European destinations issue the same short-stay visa. Here is how the 90-days-in-180 rule works and what a Schengen visit visa application usually needs.

Fourteen of the destinations we cover — Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain and Switzerland — are part of the Schengen Area. For short trips they issue the same kind of visa: the Schengen short-stay visa (Type C).
What does "90 days in any 180-day period" mean?
A Schengen visit visa lets you stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The 180 days are a rolling window, not a calendar half-year. On any day of your stay, look back over the previous 180 days: the total number of days you spent in the Schengen Area must not exceed 90.
The limit applies to the whole Schengen Area together. Days spent in Italy and days spent in France count towards the same 90.
Which country should you apply to?
You normally apply to the country that is the main destination of your trip — where you will spend the most time, or where the main purpose of your visit lies. If you will spend equal time in several countries, you usually apply to the country you will enter first.
Common requirements
Applicants generally need to demonstrate a genuine purpose of travel, sufficient financial means, suitable accommodation, valid travel medical insurance and strong ties to their country of residence. Typical documents include:
- Completed Schengen visa application form
- Valid passport and recent passport-size photographs
- Copy of your national identity card
- Bank statements and proof of sufficient financial means
- Travel itinerary and round-trip flight reservation
- Hotel booking or proof of accommodation
- Travel medical insurance with Schengen coverage
- Proof of employment, business, studies or professional status
- Documents showing your ties to your home country or country of residence
The application process
- Prepare all required documents.
- Complete the Schengen visa application form.
- Book an appointment through the authorised visa application channel.
- Submit your application and supporting documents.
- Provide biometric information, if required.
- Wait for the application to be processed and receive the decision.
